There are many Youth Jazz Orchestra's all over Britain: The Midland YJO is one (a very good one - led by John Ruddick), and there's the WYJO, several DYJO's and SYJO's and so on .......,and then there is the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Gt.Britain: NYJO. This orchestra has been around for 32 years and receives excellent players from all the other regional bands.

Incidentally, NYJO has recorded over 400 compositions, all of which are available through their affiliated music publishing company Stanza Music. While Stanza is not yet on the net, they do have a U.S. affiliate: Rex Cadwallader in Milford, Connecticut whose company, Stanza USA, handles some NYJO titles.

TOP   [ George Newell Orch. ]
A truly fine band with l3 musicians (plus male & female vocalists), and a roadie-soundmixer ....several of the sidemen are "name" band alumni. The band's music is very hip/very danceable with good charts by George, yes, but other better arrangers such as Sammy Nestico, Woody Herman, Count Basie, Les Brown, Stan Kenton, Lennie Niehaus, Bill Holman, among others. They are arguably the most working band in North Jersey. In the seven-year existence of a dance series, - put on by the Big Band Dance Society of New Jersey, they hold the first place attendance record in each and every one of the years. Thus, even though some other bands often appear, The George Newell Orchestra is known as the Lead (and Charter) Orchestra for the society. (For the past seven years they have turned away reservation requests and ticket sales at the door for the band's annual appearance on Valentine's Day !!) They have also been the official band of the lead radio station in the area (WMTR-AM) for six years now, performing for all of their designated or promotional functions (and all at a fair price). A demo dance/concert CD/audiocassette is available to serious customers, and some video as well. While the band generally plays in Northern New Jersey, they often tour the entire New York City Metroplex including Westchester County, Brooklyn, NYC, etc......name it!!! One of the very interesting sidenotes about this orchestra is that they may very well have been the last Big Band to play at Windows On The World, atop the World Trade Center before "9/11/01".

We are a traditional Big Band, consisting of 14 players saxes, trumpets, trombones, piano, bass, and drums, and a vocalist or two. Our repertoire is built upon the old Big Band standards, including music from the likes of Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, and Count Basie to name a few. Beyond that, we also play great dance music from each succeeding decade, including modern jump/swing. We play fox trots, waltzes, rumbas, tangos, mambos, cha chas, salsa, and of course, swing. Our roots go back to a little band out of Alberta, Canada that originated in the 1940s -- The Dow Rhythmers. Nadene Dow Forsyth, our founder, was the lead alto sax and clarinet player in this family band. In the past 30 years, we've been known as The Nutones, and The Gadianton Band. Under those names, we've played all over the Washington, D.C. area. After Nadene passed away in January of 2001, we renamed the band The Northern Lights. We chose this name to honor Nadene's native Canada and the Northern Lights that shine so brightly there, just as she shined so brightly when playing this music.

In their first year alone, the NDO has delighted audiences with their music from the Big Band and Swing Era right along to the hits that have touched every decade since. From corporate dinners and gatherings to private parties and weddings, the NDO can make your night a memorable one and do so with class and style. Afraid a big band might be too much or TOO big? Call anyway. Let our smaller NDO Combo give your party that extra zing that only live music can bring to a special occasion.
