1919 Carlo Bohlander, Writer/Trumpet, b. Frankfurt Am Main, Germany, d. June 5, 2004, Frankfurt, Germany. In private correspondence, a friend of Carlo Bohlander, Mr. George Anderson, has said:
"In his earlier days, he (Bohlander) operated a few Jazz clubs in the Frankfurt area.
He became known as the "Godfather of Jazz" in Germany. He had a very interesting life and
I as well as many others will miss him.
I sent his wife, Anita, a Christmas card a week ago mentionimg that I was concerned
about Carlo because I hadn't heard from him in a while. I knew he was suffering from
Altzheimer's. The last that I knew, Anita was still running the BALALAIKA, a small
bistro in the old section of Frankfurt. Many notables have visited there, including
Louis Armstrong, Mohammed Ali, and otherpersonalities in the music and
entertainment
industry.

Sam was born into a musical family, - his mother, father, grandfather and two sisters were musicians. . He first gained notice in the the 1950s, as a member of Herb Pomeroy's legendary big band in Boston, and then national notoriety came inl 1964, when he joined the Miles Davis Quintet. Currently (2007) this energetic 83-year-old multi-instrumentalist is very active in the Orlanda, Florida area. Wilson later worked in the combos of Illinois Jacquet, Erroll Garner, and Thelonious Monk, and played with Ella Fitzgerald. In the 1950s, he freelanced in New York city and frequently worked with Sonny Stitt, and recorded with Basie, Joe Newman, Monk and Lee Konitz.

(né: Norma Smith. nickname: "Big Kay") "Big Kay" and her sister Sylvia Smith Blue, danced and jitterbugged with the famed Ebony Dancers and performed with the WPA band, Louis Jordan, Ray Charles, Erskine Hawkins, Julie Lee, Baby Lovett, Milt Abel and Betty Miller, Claude Williams, Jay McShann and B.C. and Ben Kynard. In 1957, "Big Kay" and her sister, Sylvia, founded Smith Sisters Dance Studio in Kansas City, KS. In the 45 years the studio operated, "Big Kay" enriched many lives. An accomplished dancer, which was her greatest contribution, she will be best recalled as a member of "The Smith Sisters" dance team.

1925. La Revue Negre, the first American Black troupe to play in Paris, debuted on this date. A vivacious, sensual 18-year-old woman was featured in a supporting role: Josephine Baker. While America shunned her, the Parisians, with their appetite for exotic personalities with
dark skin, immediately fell in love with her. Baker became an overnight sensation in Europe. She reveled in near nudity and was famous for her "banana dance", for which she wore little more than a belt of bananas, and it became the trademark of European revues. During World War II, she was a spy for the French Resistance.
