1929     John Carter, Clarinet/alto sax, b. Fort Worth, TX, USA. d. March 31, 1991, USA. (complications from lung cancer). Some of his boyhood friends included Ornette Coleman and Charles Moffett. At age 15, Carter graduated from high school and then earned a B.A. in music at Missouri's Lincoln University, During his school days, played reeds and flute in local Jazz and Blues groups. In 1956, the University of Colorado bestowed a master's degree in music upon him. In 1961, he settled in Los Angeles, after doing some educational work that included founding the Wind College (in L.A.). In 1981, he founded 'Clarinet Summit' with Alvin Batiste, Jimmy Hamilton and David Murray on bass clarinet. It was a celebrated group, but perhaps his greatest achievements came in the 1980s with his series of albums that included "Episodes In The Development Of American Folk Music"; "Roots And Folklore"; Dauwhe (1982); "Castles of Ghana" (1985); "Dance Of The Love Ghosts" (1986); "Fields" (1988); and "Shadows On A Wall". (1989).

1940     Mamie "Galore" Davis, Blues vocals. b. Erwin, USA. d. Oct. 6, 2001 (stroke, age 61). After graduating from O'Bannon High School and joined a local band. During her career, she performed with such musicians as Little Johnny Burton, Buddy Hicks, Little Milton and the Ike and Tina Turner Revue. In 1965, under her first producer, Monk Higgins, she recorded her first solo recording, "Special Agent 34-24-38", for the St. Lawrence label. She recorded two more singles for St. Lawrence, including her biggest hit, "It Ain't Necessary", in 1966.
1946     Jerry Donahue, guitar, b. USA. Member group: 'Fairport Convention' (UK folk group), 1969 single "Si Tu Dois Partir" charted UK No.21. Donahue was born in the US, and was raised in England, becoming part of the British folk-rock scene when he replaced Richard Thompson who had departed from 'Fairport Convention'. Donahue has worked with such artists as Elton John, George Harrison, Joan Armatrading and Gerry Rafferty.

1916     Herb Jeffries, Vocals, b. Detroit, MI, USA. (Currently -2005- living in Idyllwild, CA, USA) Herb is of Ethiopian-French Canadian-Italian & Irish descent. He was married 5 times, once to famed striptease actress 'Tempest Storm' (b. Feb. 29, 1928, Eastman, Georgia, USA). His daughter, Fran Jeffries, is also a fine singer. In addition to his work with the Duke Ellington band in the early 1940s, Herb has also appeared in a number of Hollywood films - usually as a Black cowboy (and usually as "Herb Jeffrey").
1936     Willie Kent, Bassist/leader, b. MS, USA. His band was called 'Willie Kent & The Gents', and they were a fine ensemble playing group. Willie never knew his father. At the tender age of 13, he was unjustly sent to county prison work camp. He subsequently found work as a sideman with such stars as Little Walter, Muddy Waters and Junior Wells, among others, before finally forming his own band.

1931     Anthony Newley, vocals/actor, b. London, England, d. April 14, 1999. 1960 single "Why". charted UK No.1 Born illegitimately in Hackney (area of east London) and leaving school at age 14, he first found fame as a child actor as the 'Artful Dodger' in David Lean's 1948 film 'Oliver Twist.' In 1956, at age 17, Newley made his U.S. debut appearing in six films that year.During the 1950s and 1960s, Newley was everywhere - on the screen, on television and, seven times, in the top ten song charts. He also composed two songs, "Who Can I Turn To When Nobody Needs Me?", and "The Roar of the Greasepaint (The Smell of the Crowd)" -(musical) For many years, Ill health had plagued Newley. In 1985, he was first diagnosed with renal cell cancer and had one kidney removed. In 1997, the cancer metastasized attacking his lungs, and then spreading to his liver. For many years Newley lived in Surrey, England, before moving to Florida (USA) permanently. He had donated his papers to the Boston University Library Special Collections Dept. Newley married and divorced three times. In 1956, he first married Elizabeth Ann Lynn, and the marriage was dissolved in 1963. The same year he married Joan Collins; and they divorced in 1971. In 1989, he divorced his third wife, air hostess Dareth Dunn. At the time of Newley's demise, he was survived by his mother, Grace, age 96 (with whom he lived in Surrey since 1992 after 22 years living in the U.S.), and four children, a boy (Sasha) and a girl (Tara) with Joan Collins, and another boy (Christopher) and girl (Shelby) with Dareth Dunn. His third wife, Dareth Newley Dunn, described him as "a dear, sweet, loving friend and father ... consummate performer and ultimate composer".
