While his very earliest years as a musician are now cloaked in obscurity, it is known that he freelanced in New Orleans. During 1930-31 , he was playing with Armand J. Piron's Sunny South Syncopators and, during 1932-'37, toured with Don Albert's Texas-based Swing band, (making one recording date but probably not taking any solos). From 1937 on, Alcorn worked in New Orleans, playing with many groups including those led by Paul Barbarin, Sidney Desvignes, Oscar Celestin (1951) and Octave Crosby. In 1954, Alcorn moved to Los Angeles where he played with Kid Ory's Creole Jazz Band 1956. ( Their four records are easily the best of his career.) In 1956, he returned to New Orleans, where he played steadily into the 1980s with local groups. He also toured Europe a few times (including a 1978 trip with Chris Barber). His work with Kid Ory, and others, have assured him a place in history as a New Orleans legend.

1951 Mark Isham, trumpet/piano/violin/synthesizer, b. New York, NY, USA. A fascinating career. Today (2005), Isham is considered one of the top Hollywood film composers. His career spans two decades and over 50 film and TV credits including his debut with Disney's Never Cry Wolf (1983), The Hitcher (1986), Point Break (1991), Little Man Tate (1991), A River Runs Through It (1992), Of Mice and Men (1992), as well as television scores on "Chicago Hope" (1994) and "EZ Streets" (1996) for which he received an Emmy. Born into a musical family (his mother was a violinist and his father taught music and history), Mark first studied classical piano, trumpet and violin from a very early age. His first professional work was as a trumpet player in the Oakland and San Francisco Symphonies. Curiously, while still in his early 20s, he went from the symphony halls to playing in various rock and Jazz bands, and programming synthesizers. And, although playing classical trumpet remained his primary career, he also guested as a rock artist with such bands as the 'Rolling Stones'. He has also backed singer Joni Mitchell, and was on some Van Morrison records. His debut album as a solo artist," Vapour Drawings" was issued to critical acclaim. He has received Grammy nominations for the follow-up albums, "Castalia" and "Tibet", while his latest album, "Miles Remembered: The Silent Way Project" was awarded 'Best Jazz Album' in 1999 by the London Times

1952 Allison Rayner, Bass, b. Bromley, England
1963 Marcus Roberts, piano, b. Jacksonville, FL, USA. (some sources say b. August 7.) Roberts is an outspoken proponent of Traditional Jazz who shows very little patience for bop or other Jazz styles. Roberts, who is blind, attended a school for the blind near his childhood home of Jacksonville, FL. As a young boy, he began playing piano, and in the mid-1980s studied the piano at Florida State University . In 1985, he replaced pianist Kenny Kirkland in trumpeter Wynton Marsalis's band, recording as a sideman with Marsalis for the rest of the decade and into the 1990s. During this time, he was also recording under his own name for Columbia Records. When Marsalis became resident at New York's 'Jazz at Lincoln Center', Roberts wrote and arranged extensively for the house big band, and participated in most of that cultural center's activities variously as a composer, performer, or teacher.
1930 Theodore Walter "Sonny" Rollins, tenor sax/composer, b. New York, NY, USA. (Sources showing Sept 9 birthday are apparently wrong -according to Rollins himself). In 1972, he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. Sonny first studied piano, then alto sax, before permanently switching to tenor in 1946. In 1949, he made his recording debut with Babs Gonzales, and in the same year worked on dates with J.J. Johnson and Bud Powell ( Fats Navarro was on the same session). In 1951, Rollins started recording with Miles Davis and in 1953 with Thelonious Monk. He was out of music briefly, but in late 1955, he became a member of the Max Roach-Clifford Brown Quintet remaining with them after Brownie's death, until 1957, after which he was always a leader. (Regretfully) in the 1950s, he embraced the hard 'Bop' style of playing, with what many musicologists felt was a decline in the quality of his work. Still, his fellow musicians acclaim his playing.

It was while he was living in Montreal that Tobey made a few trips to New York City where he studied with pianist Kenny Barron, In 1995, Paul moved to Toronto where his music has flourished.
