1877 Buddy Bolden, and also on our Amer. Bands Database at Buddy Bolden, Cornet, b. New Orleans, LA, USA, d. Nov. 4, 1931, Jackson, LA, USA (Some sources show b. 1868) Buddy's life has become shrouded in Jazz legend. One writer, Donald Marquis, has written the definitive book with his "In Search of Buddy Bolden". In 1890, Bolden left school, learned cornet and originally played dance music. He never recorded (a legendary 1898 cylinder has never been found), but verbal history reports he was very blues-oriented. By 1900, he was a popular, and sort after musician, but by 1906 he was slowly becoming insane, perhaps due to his suffering from Tertiary Syphilis. In 1907, Bolden was committed to the Jackson Mental Institute, remaining there, completely forgotten, for last 24 years of his life. He was buried in an unmarked grave at the Holt Cemetery, in New Orleans.

1933 Buzz Busby . composer/mandolin (Bluegrass), b: Eros, LA, U.S., d: Jan 5, 2003, Catonsville, MD, USA. né: Bernarr Graham Busbice. He was one half of the duo, Buzz & Jack,and led The Bayou Boys, a group that appeared on TV's, "The Hayloft Hoedown", and "The Louisiana Hayride". He also worked with his brother, guitarist and singer, Wayne Busbice.
1963 Mark Chesnutt, (Traditional) C&W guitar/vocals, b. Beaumont, TX, USA. At age 5, Mark, the son of country singer Bob Chesnutt, learned how to play guitar and, at age 16, made his professional debut playing in his father's band. Mark has led the revival of the old-fashioned Honky Tonk sound made famous by stars such as George Jones and Merle Haggard.
1911 Zeke Clements, (Cowboy) vocals/guitar, b. Warrior, AL, USA. At just age 17, Zeke was already a radio personality working as part of Chicago's famous 'National Barn Dance' radio program. He later went on to become a regular on Radio Station WSM's 'Grande Ole Opry' and the 'Louisiana Hayride' shows. Among his hit releases are "Smoke on the Water" and "Blue Mexico Skies." Very few folks today recall that Clements was also the original voice of "Bashful", -one of Snow White's Seven Dwarfs in the Disney full length cartoon film.
1939 David Allan Coe, C&W singer/songwriter/guitar/ventriloquist/magician. b. Akron, OH, USA. Tagged as: The Mysterious Rhinestone Cowboy. David has told interviewers that 20 of his first 34 years were spent in prisons and reform schools, usually for minor offenses, although there were some serious ones too. He even endured a stretch on "Death Row". David is very public about his prison background and is involved with several projects intended to help both inmates and former inmates. He is deeply involved with the 'Seventh Step foundation' (a re-motivation program for ex-convicts), and 'Aliases Inc.' (helping prisoners, who have written songs, to get their songs published and recorded).

1951 Dany Doriz, vibraphone, b. France. (possibly born Sept 7). Originally studied classical music on piano and saxophone. At age 16, he made the vibraphone his main instrument. As a young man, Dany concertized in both France and Europe. In 1975, he met Lionel Hampton, and soon joined Hampton's band touring Europe. (and was recorded as part of Hampton's band by the Barclay label) Over his career, he has performed with such notables as: "Wild Bill" Davison, Milt Buckner, Bill Coleman, Ray Bryant, Al Grey, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Illinois Jacquet, Cat Anderson, Hal Singer, Red Holloway, Benny Bailey, Arnett Cobb, "Butch" Miles, Eddie Jones, Clark Terry, and Buster Cooper. In the 1990s, Doriz became the musical director of Paris' famed nightclub "Caveau de la Huchette".

1962 Laurent Filipe, trumpet, composer, producer, b. Sâo Paulo, Brazil. At just age 15, he was already playing and recording professionally in Lisbon, Portugal. At age 18, he relocated to the USA to study music. In 1985, he graduated from the University of Kansas (U.S.A.- in Music Theory and Composition) and, in 1987, received a post-graduate diploma in Film-scoring from Berklee College of Music in Boston (U.S.A.), where he studied trumpet under professors Dr. Roger Stoner, Greg Hopkins, and attended seminars with Wynton Marsalis. Filipe has performed as a leader of his own group, and as a sideman in different clubs and festivals in the U.S, Europe, Asia and Africa.

x 1929 Charles Moffett Sr., drums/percussion/trumpet/vibes, b. Fort Worth, TX, USA, d. Feb, 14, 1997 (Perhaps born: Sept. 11). He was the father of a very musical family that includes Codaryl on drums, Mondre on trumpet, Charles Jr. on tenor sax, Charnett on bass, and Charisse on vocals. As a teenager, he played the trumpet with Jimmy Witherspoon and other groups. It was during his college years that he began to play the drums. From 1953-1961, while working full time as a high school teacher in Texas, he would, during the evenings and weekends, sit in with local Jazz and R&B bands. In 1961, he joined altoist Ornette Coleman's group, just before Coleman went into a three-year retirement. 1963 found him working with Sonny Rollins, also leading his own group that included Pharoah Sanders and Carla Bley, and also recorded with Archie Shepp's group. ("Four for 'Trane"). When Coleman started playing again, Mofette was the trio's drummer during 1965-1967 (the bassist was David Izenzo). 1970 found him living in Oakland, CA, director of a music school and playing locally with Steve Turre and Prince Lasha. Later, in addition to continuing his teaching, he also played with Frank Lowe in New York city. He was age 68 on his demise.

He was raised by his grandmother, blues singer Julia Morgan. In 1967, living in San Francisco, CA, he made his theatrical debut (on New Year's Eve 1970) as a member of "The Cockettes," an androgynous theatrical group. Subsequently, he pursed a career billing himslef as "Ruby Blue", before putting together "The Hot Band" with Bobby Blood (trumpet), Chris Mostert (saxophone), James Q. Smith (guitar), Kerry Hatch (bass) and Travis Fullerton (drums).

1957 Lisa Thorson, vocals/arranger/composer/teacher. Since 1979, Thorson has been confined to a wheel chair (Spina bifida ) but hasn't permitted her disability to interfere with her career in music and theatre. She earned her bachelor's degree from Boston Conservatory, and a master's degree from the New England Conservatory. Thorson is an associate professor, teaching at Boston's Berklee College of Music. She has also served on the faculty at Wellesley College, New England Conservatory, and the Longy School of Music. For over a decade, she has led her own quintet and has performed in concerts in Italy, Canada, and the U.S. Her ensemble is comprised of pianist Tim Ray, saxophonist Cercie Miller, drummer George Schuller and bass player David Clark. Among the artists with whom she has played/recorded are Harvie Swartz, Steve Grossman, Herb Pomeroy, the Billy Taylor Trio, Sheila Jordan, Valerie Capers, Kenny Wheeler, Bruce Barth, the New England Conservatory Big Band, Max Roach, Jerry Bergonzi, and Linda Hopkins.

1994. Nicky Hopkins, pianist (b. 1944, London, England, UK), died in October. Age: 50. For almost two decades, he was rock music's most in-demand session pianist.
