1923     Marge Champion, Dancer. b. Los Angeles, CA, USA. Happily, Marge is still with us (August 2000) and living in New York City. né: Marjorie Belcher. Now best recalled as the Marge in 'Marge and Gower Champion' dance team. Prior to her marriage to Gower Champion, she used the stage name of Marjorie Bell. In 1945, she and Gower formed a team called "Gower and Bell" and when they were married in 1947, became known as 'Marge and Gower Champion'. They were divorced in 1973. She then married Boris Segal, and they remained married till Boris died in 1981. Did you know that Marge served as a cartoonist's model in two of Walt Disney's animations - she modeled for the heroine in "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (1937), and as the Blue Fairy in "Pinocchio". (1940). (Some film footage was shot showing her dancing around in her Snow White costume.)

1911     Floyd "Dipper Boy" Council, Blues/Folk guitar, b. Chapel Hill, NC, USA. d. June 1976, Sanford, NC, USA. In the mid-1920s, he was playing the streets of Chapel Hill with his friends, the brothers Leo and Thomas Strowd. In January 1937, John Baxter Long, a talent scout for ACR Records brought him to New York where he was recorded playing with another Bluesman, -'Blind Boy' Fuller. In the 1940s and 1950s, Floyd was back in his home town of Chapel Hill, playing either alone or with his old friend Thomas Strowd, at the local radio station and in country clubs. In the late 1960s, he suffered a stroke partially paralysing his throat muscles and slowing his motor skills. He relocated to Sanford, NC, where he later died.

In 1981, he met, and had an affair with actress Rosanna Arquette. One of the original Toto members, in 1988 he left the band. During his career, Steve has played with Janne Schaffer, Chicago, Don Henley, Rod Stewarty and Yes,among others. Steve, together with brothers Jeff and Mike Porcaro, David Paich, and Steve Lukather played with the Swedish heavy metal band 'Radioactive', featuring guitarist Tommy Denander and singer Andreas Eklundh, on their 1996 album "Ceremony Of Innocence". In 1998 he joined 'Toto' for European promotion tour for the album "Toto XX". That same year he joined 'Toto' as a guest musician for Totos album "Mindfields".

1928     Horace Ward Martin Tavares Silver, Piano, Composer leader, b. Norwalk, CT, USA. . Horace studied the Sax while in High School, and the Piano privately with a church organist. Stan Getz heard him playing at a club called the 'Sundown' in Hartford, CT, and invited him to tour with his group. He spent a year with Getz ('50-1) and then settled in New York City. The small combos with which he then played included Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers; Terry Gibbs, Coleman Hawkins, Bill Harris, Oscar Pettiford, and Lester "Prez" Young, and still others. In 1954, he won the 'Downbeat Critic's New Star Award' for Piano. In Sept. 1956, he formed his own quintet, with which he recorded many of his own tunes.

2001.    Jazz saxophonist Jay Migliori, a founding member of the Grammy-winning jazz group Supersax, who worked with musicians and singers ranging from Frank Zappa to Frank Sinatra, died of colon cancer, at age 70. Over his long career, he had played on some 4,000 recordings. Migliori once described his own style as "modern acoustic jazz with roots in bebop". Still, he was equally comfortable working with pop stars as varied as Dean Martin and Celine Dion, rock musicians including Zappa and the Four Seasons, and even country stars like Glen Campbell. Over the years, he had performed with more than two dozen bands including Stan Kenton, Miles Davis, Terry Gibbs and Maynard Ferguson.
