1913     Cosimo DiCeglie, Guitar, b. Andria, Italy, d. 1980. As a child he studied guitarand later performed with various groups in his home town of Andria. He also recorded with American Herb Flemming's orchestra, then touring Italy and elsewhere in Europe. In 1936, he recorded with the Orchestra del Circolo Jazz Hot di Milano; during 1936-'37, he recorded with the clarinetist Piero Rizza; and from 1938 on, with his own groups. (Di Ceglie's playing may be heard to advantage on his 1938 recording of the Hoagy Carmichael - Mitchell Parrish song Star Dust - Odeon 19427). Perhaps his best recordings are those he made with the pianist Enzo Ceragioli and with Kramer Gorni (1938-41). During World War II he was heard on Italian radio with a sextet, and post-WW2, he made some excellent recordings in 1949, 1956, and 1959 as a leader.

1927     Fran Landesman, lyricist, b. New York (Manhattan), NY, USA, (née: Frances Deitsch. In 1949, Fran met Jay Landesman, founder and editor of Neurotica magazine and the couple married the following year. Relocating to St. Louis, Jay’s hometown, and together with Jay’s brother, Fred, they opened a successful nightclub, the Crystal Palace,. Fran now began writing songs with the Palace’s piano player, Tommy Wolf, many of which were recorded by musicians such as Sarah Vaughn, Miles Davis, and Ella Fitzgerald. Fran has published several poetry collections, and cointinued writting songs with Tommy Wolf until his death in 1978. She also collaborated with musicians Bob Dorough, Alec Wilder, and, later in the 1980s, Simon Wallace. She continues writing, recording, performing, and publishing.
