1923     Ed Cassidy, drums, b. Bakersfield, CA, USA. In 1937, Ed started playing professionally in Bakersfield (about 110 miles north of Los Angeles, CA.) In 1945, he was released from Wartime service in the U.S.Navy, and returned to actively playing in Bakersfield. From 1946 to 1948, was on the road with several Midwest Territory Bands Big Bands.The best known was called 'The Lee Williams Orch.', (Leader was also a Drummer, 14 people all together including one male vocalist) travelling from Chicago to Denver and everything in between! At one point, they did 282 consecutive one-niters.Ed has played Jazz and Pop for 25 years and Rock and Roll for over 35 years, -touring the U.S.and Europe many times.Cassidy has played with Zoot and Ray Sims, Dexter Gordon, The Condoli Brothers, Roland Kirk, Roy Ayers, Lee Konitz, and others.Also, in Rock and Roll, he played with Ry Cooder and Taj Mal in a Delta blues group called 'The Rising Sons!' Cassidy also played in a Jazz Quartet with Ray Manzerek long before he played with 'The Doors' Rock Band with Jim Morrison.On January 2nd 1997, Cassidy lost his long time partner, guitarist Randy California, in a swimming accident.Randy was 45 and Cassidy was 74! They had first started playing together when Randy was age 14 and Ed was 42! They played together through Nov.1996, when Randy perished in a swimming accident. Randy and Ed co-founded, and played, in the World Renowned Rock and Roll Group SPIRIT.They recorded over 20 albums with Spirit, and 1 Platinum Record ("The 12 Dreams Album!").In 1998, Cassidy resumed playing professionally.Ed is currently (2003) planning on celebrating his 80th Birthday in Chicago with friends and recording a Jazz/Blues and Rock and Roll Album! Cassidy now lives in Taft CA (about 38 miles southwest of Bakersfield, CA, USA).

1928     Maynard Ferguson, trumpet/leader, b.Verdun, Quebec, Canada, d. Aug. 23, 2006, Ojai, CA, USA (kidney and liver failure due to an abdominal infection). In the late 1940s, Maynard played the Boyd Raeburn and then Charlie Barnet orchestras. From 1950 to 1953, he was with Stan Kenton. During the late '60s, he toured extensively in England, Europe, and the Near East. In the '70s, he briefly lived in India. He also had a couple of commercial "hits" in 1970, most notably with Jim Webb's "McArthur Park", and Bill Conti's "Gonna Fly Now" (theme from film "Rocky"). Ferguson, a multi-instrumentalist playing trumpet, french horn, trombone and euphonium, is noted for his exceptional command of the trumpet's higher register. Stan Kenton once described Maynard Ferguson as a trumpeter capable of "stiring great feelings of fire".

Early on, Payne studied with drummer Vic Berton in New York.city In 1944, he began his professional career playing with the Dud & Paul Bascomb band, "Hot Lips Page", Earl Bostic (1945-'47) and Tiny Grimes (off and on during 1947-'50) and with Erskine Hawkins. In early 1955, when Gus Johnson left Count Basie, Payne was his replacement, and gave the Basie band a real Swinging drive. He remainded with Basie for 10 years. In 1965, he left Basie and formed his own trio, which backed singer Frank Sinatra. Following that, he joined the the Harry James orchestra, remaining with James for about ten years, before rejoining Count Basie in 1973. During the mid-1970s, he also played with Illinois Jacquet, and then returned to James' orchestra, shortly before his death.
