March 24 BIRTHDAYS 1922 Dave Appell, label co-owner (Cameo/Parkway)/arranger/composer, b. USA. Perhaps best recalled as a member of the team of Appell and Mann. Howevere, in the 1940s, Appell began his own musical career arranging for the Earle "Fatha" Hines, and Benny Carter bands. Appell next formed his own group "Dave Appell and the Applejacks". Subsequently, he went on to become Music Director for the "Ernie Kovacs Show" (TV). In 1958, Kal Mann and Appell met at the Philadelphia offices of Cameo/Parkway Records. Among the stars that they helped, and the tunes that they worked on, were Chubby Checker and his "The Twist", and "Let's Twist Again"; The Davells and their "Bristol Stomp"; and The Orlons for their release "South Street". Incidentally, Kal Mann's career started in the 1940's and 50's as a comedy writer for 'Red' Buttons, Danny Thomas, and Jack E. Leonard, among others. In the late 1950s, Kal Mann and Bernie Lowe co-founded Cameo/Parkway Records. Bernie Lowe had managed to convince Mann that if he could write comic parodies, he could also write lyrics. The result was that Mann went on to compose hit songs for Elvis Presley, Nat King Cole, Andy Williams andPat Boone. 1917 Memo Bernabei, Leader, sax, b. Pittsburgh, PA, USA.
