1943     Oliver Gannon, guitar. b: Dublin, Ireland. His father, Joe Gannon, was a pianist. In 1957, when he was 20 years old, his family moved to Winnipeg, Canada, and Oliver only then began to study the guitar. During 1964-'69, he attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts where he studied composition and arranging with William Malloff and Herb Pomeroy. He then relocated and made Vancouver, BC, Canada his home, initially working as a studio musician. In 1970, he was one of the men who formed the "Pacific Salt" band. In 1975, he and Fraser MacPherson (tenor sax) began a relationship that would go on to include 3 tours to the USSR, 1 to Europe, broadcasts, and recordings. Over the years, he has worked with a Sextet led by trombonist Ian McDougall (b: June 14, 1938, Calgary, Canada). Both Al Wold and John Nolan worked with him in the 'The Oliver Gannon/Patty Hervey Quartet', while Miles Black was a part of 'The Oliver Gannon Quartet'. Oliver's wife is also very musical, she is the singer Patty Hervey.

1922     Vartan (Haroutunian) Hart, piano, leader, b. Everett, MA, USA, d. July 9, 2007, Hanover, MA, USA After graduating Everett High School, he served in the Army Air Force during WWII. As a Lieutenant 1st class. Hart flew 37 missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, among other medals. After an Honorable discharge, he attended the Boston Conservatory of Music. He then played with such bands as Freddie Slack, Stan Kenton and Herb Pomeroy. He started with a Trio at "The Stables" in Boston and added players which evolved into the 16 piece "Herb Pomeroy Band" which played at the "Newport Jazz Festival", "Birdland" and the "Apollo Theatre" in New York city and recorded 3 albums. He opened the "Jazz Workshop" on Boylston Street, Boston, and brought in the best talent available such as, Stan Getz, Art Blakey, Max Roach, Carmen McRae, John Coltrane, Herbie Mann, Dizzy Gillespie and others. After starting a family, he found a "day job" as a manager of several Star Markets on the South Shore. After retiring he gave music lessons at home and joined the "Frank Shooshan Band" and the "Satuit Band". He loved good Jazz, good classical music and was a crossword puzzle whiz.
1909     Harry Hayes, alto sax/clarinet. b. , d. March 18, 2002, Stoneleigh, Surrey, England. (Age: 92) Harry was a very familiar figure on the British jazz scene from its earliest days until his retirement in 1965, Played with several well known bands English bands including Fred Elizalde, Bert Ambrose, Geraldo, Syd Lipton. Later (1944), Harry led his own band. In 1947, after retiring from active performing, he open his own music shop. Harry was also a highly regarded saxophone teacher.
