1891     Charles Hubbard Thompson, ragtime pianist, composer, b. St. Louis, MO, USA, d. June 13, 1964. In 1911, he left St. Louis and toured in Ohio and Indiana. ( Interestingly, in 1912, he met and became friends with another pianist, James P. Johnson (in either Washington D.C or Coney Island, NY. ) Thompson continued touring and in time played in Buffalo, NY, Detroit, MI. Cleveland, OH, Toledo, OH, Erie, PA, and Atlantic City, NJ. In 1916, his composition "The Lily Rag", made him the winner of the great ragtime contest held at the Booker T. Washington Theatre in St. Louis, Among the others that he "defeated" was Tom Turpin, the owner of that theatre, as well as the owner of the "Rosebud Club", where, from ca 1900 on, nearly all the great ragtimers of America would meet.
