1922     Bob Thiele, record producer/owner/songwriter/leader, b. New York (Brooklyn), NY, USA, d. Jan. 30, 1996, age 73. As a teenager growing up in New York City, Thiele was already active in the Greenwich Village area jazz and blues scene. He was also running Sunday afternoon 'Jam' sessions at Kelly's Stable, a famous club on New York's 52nd Street, and even produced his own magazine called 'Jazz'. In 1952, he was placed in charge of Decca's subsidiary, Coral Records. He convinced the label to release Buddy Holly's "That'll Be the Day" (Holly's first hit). He also produced hit releases for the McGuire Sisters, Lawrence Welk, and for his future wife, Teresa Brewer, whom he married in 1972. As a songwriter, his collaborators included Milton DeLugg, Ruth Roberts, Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, Buddy Kaye, and Teresa Brewer. As a producer, he is perhaps best known for his association with John Coltrane. They first met at the 'Village Vanguard' (a club in the Greenwich Village area of New York City). Thiele worked with Coltrane on several projects, including 'AL ove Supreme'. Other artists with whom Thiele worked include Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Carter, Jackie Wilson, Quincy Jones, Charles Mingus, Jack Kerouac, McCoy Tyner, and Sonny Rollins. In the mid-80's, working at MCA, he released an album "Blues for Coltrane", that won a Grammy. As a record label owner, his labels included Flying Dutchman, Doctor Jazz and Red Baron. He died at age 73.
