Back in New York, she joined a modern jazz group called the 'Johnny Conrad Dancers' that was seen on several TV shows, including the 'Milton Berle Show', and 'The Colgate Comedy Hour', among others. She then formed a dance team ('The Haydens'), but in 1956, abandoned dancing for a career as a singer-songwriter. In 1956, after appearing at Harlem's Apollo Theatre, she was signed to Eldorado Records. That year, finding nothing suitable to record, she wrote a song titled "Come On Baby". In December 1957, after appearing with Alan Freed at the Brooklyn Paramount, Jo Ann changed record companies, and released "Wait A Minute" on 'Gone Records'. During this time, she was often on stage at the Brooklyn Paramount theatre, and on Dick Clark's 'American Bandstand Show' in Philadelphia. She also sang two songs in the movie "Go Johnny Go". In the fall of 1960, she again switched labels when she signed with ABC Records, and released "Kookie Little Paradise".

1907     Art Jarrett, vocals, leader, b. New York (Brooklyn), USA, d. July 23, 1987, Los Angeles, California, USA. (pneumonia). During the 1930s and 1940s, Jarrett's high tenor "counter melody" vocal style made him a very popular singer. He appeared (and recorded) with the Frankie Trumbauer, Red Nichols,Earl Burtnett, Ted Weems, and Jimmy Noone orchestras. In the mid-1930s, he led his own orchestra while married to swimmer Eleanor Holm (b. Dec. 6, 1913, New York, NY, USA, d. Jan. 31, 2004, Miami, FL, USA. (kidney failure). They were married Sept. 2, 1933 - divorced June 9, 1938) He was so popular that Hollywood called, and he appeared in feature films and shorts, introducing such hit songs as "Everything I Have is Yours" (film: Dancing Lady (1933)), "Let's Fall in Love" (film: Let's Fall in Love (1933)) "Did You Ever See a Dream Walking" (film: Sitting Pretty (1933)). In 1934, his voice was uncredited when he sang in the Fred Astaire - Ginger Rogers hit "The Gay Divorcee". That same year, his voice was also uncredited when he sang in the films "Hollywood Here We Come", The Gay Bride". "Susie's Affairs" , and "Hollywood Party" He also appeared in the film Trigger Pals (1939), and "I've Got a Date With a Dream" (film: My Lucky Star (1938)). Jarrett also appeared on Broadway in "Walk With Music." In early 1941, he took over Hal Kemp's band after Kemp was killed in an auto accident. He led orchestras throughout the 1940s, but with the demise of the Big Bands era, he became a disc jockey and later a salesman. Jarrett was the son of stage actor/playwright Arthur L. Jarrett (1884-1960)

1983     Noah Lampert, sax, b. Washington, D.C., USA. Noah was already taking saxophone lessons at age 7 from Robbie Robinson, a well-known Washington, D.C. area jazz musician. In May 1998, during a high school commencement ceremony, Lampert performed a sax solo for the then U.S. first lady, Hillary Clinton. Again in 1998, Noah along with three other jazz musicians, formed the 'Noah Lampert Session'. His debut CD, "House of the Rising Sax" included a unique version of the classic "House of the Rising Sun" In 1999, he took a summer course at Boston's famed Berklee School of Music.

1946     Bob McHugh, piano/compopser. b. New York, NY, USA. He began working in New York and New Jersey night clubs and hotels, and over the next 30 years has worked virtually ever major venue in the New York/New Jersey area. Among the stars with whom he has recorded are Ray Mantilla, Rich Austin, Raul Paonessa, Ron Naspo, Earl Sauls, Kevin McCarthy, Vinnie Cutro, Tony Signa, Tommy La Bella, Jackie Jones, MNB, David Humm, and Jon Kline, and has worked with Joe Morello, Bill Crow, Andrew Cyrille, Lisle Atkinson, Eliot Zigmond, Lou Grassi, Vince Mazzilli and Max Weinberg. Over the years, McHugh has been on many recordings, and has composed music for Frank Chacksfield (which was aired over the BBC). As a leader, he has two albums released "Soaring On Wings Of Ivory and Black" ('Outstanding' label), and his latest release, "Manhattan Sunrise", ('Alliance' label). He has received an ASCAP popular award every year since 1989.

At age twelve, he was playing guitar in a 'strip club', joining his first band The Strangers. During his late teens, he settled in San Francisco, CA, and, in 1966, formed his own band, 'The Santana Blues Band', supplementing his income by washing dishes. Carlos finally found succes when his band appeared at the 1969 Woodstock Festival (NY). The bands 1970 album 'Abraxas' enjoyed a 40 week run on the USA top 40 charts, and also spent six weeks at the top of the UK charts. In 1991, Carlos was arrested at Houston, TX, Airport when officials found Cannabis stashed in a film canister. He received a six month deferred sentence after agreeing to perform at an anti-drugs fund-raising concert.
