1961     Mark Day, guitar, b. Manchester, England. Member group: 'Happy Mondays', a "Britpop" band hailing from Manchester, England. The original group included Sean Ryder (vocals), Paul Ryder (his brother - bass), Mark Day (guitar), Gary Whelan (Drums), Paul Davis (keyboards), and Mark "Bez" Berry (percussion/idiot dancing) - and subsequently, Black singer, Rowetta, joined.. Their strong dance rhythms helped them reach the UK's Top Ten in 1990, and then "Pills 'N' Thrills And Bellyaches" reached No. 1, establishing them as a major British band,

1947     Marianne Faithfull, vocals, b: England. After a brief career as an actress, Faithful achieved notoriety as Mick Jagger's girlfriend. In the early 1970's, Faithful withdrew from performing as a rusult of a widely-publicized treatment for heroin addiction. In 1977, she resumed her career with the release of her album "Faithless".

Married to Kristine Luna).
1900     Willie Humphrey Jr., Clarinet, b. New Orleans, LA, USA. d. June 7, 1994, age 93. 1918. Professional debut playing with one of best known New Orleans bands - Excelsior Brass Band. Subsequently he played with New Orleans Jazzmen including Lee Collins; Lawrence Duhe; King Oliver; and Dewey Jackson. During the 1930's he played with a W.P.A. (U.S.Gov't sponsored band working during the 'Great Depression'. and also with a Paul Barbarin combo. Willie was a grandson of Cornetist/Teacher Prof. Jim Humphrey. Some of Prof. Humphrey's children and grandchildren became known jazz stars.

Nov. 23, 1949, Newark, New Jersey, USA., Janis Siegel (July 23, 1952, New York (Brooklyn), New York, USA), Laurel Massé (Dec. 29, 1951, Holland, Michigan, USA), and Tim Hauser. (b. Dec. 12, 1941, Troy, New York, USA) Their 1977 release "Chanson D'amour" hit No.1 in the UK (and more or less flopped in USA)
1903     Clyde "Sugar Blues" McCoy, leader/trumpet, b. Ashland, KY, USA; d. June, 1, 1990, Memphis, TN, USA.
1905     "Snub" Mosley, trombone/slide sax, b. Little Rock, AR, USA. d. Jul 21, 1981, New York (Harlem), NY, USA. né: Lawrence Leo Mosley. Studied Cutair Sch. of Music in Cincinnati, OH, USA. 1925-'31 with Alphonso Trent Orch. '34-'36 with Claude Hopkins orch. '36-7 with Louis Armstrong, and in '37 six months with Fats Waller. In 1938 formed own band and was called 'The Man With The Funny Horn' (he did a novelty tune on his invention, -the Slide Sax. A horn with a sax mouthpiece, and a slide). In 1945 he toured the South Pacific for the USO. In 1952, he toured England, France and Germany.
1929     Matt "Guitar" Murphy, guitar, b. Sunflower, MS, USA. In the 1950s, Murphy's Jazz-tinged riffs backed "Memphis Slim" on that pianist's United and Vee-Jay Records releses. However, he will perhaps always be best recalled for his work with the 'Blues Brothers', and appearing prominently in their eponymous 1980 hit movie.

1966     Danilo Pérez, piano/composer, b. Panama. As a leader of his own ensembles, and as a member of the new Wayne Shorter Quintet and other acclaimed jazz groups (including Dizzy Gillespie's United Nations Orch.), Pérez has made an indelible mark on contemporary Jazz. Pérez has earned an enviable reputation both for his insightful and innovative treatments of the standard jazz repertoire and as a leading exponent of Pan-American Jazz. He has earned three Grammy® nominations, numerous awards, and critical acclaim for his recorded works and passionate live performances.
1970     Glen Phillips, singer/songwriter, b. Santa Barbara, CA, USA. - 'Toad the Wet Sprocket', a American high school Rock band formed in the mid-1980s at a high school in Santa Barbara, California, by friends Dean Dinning (bass/backing vocals/keyboards), Randy Guss (drums), Todd Nichols (guitar/vocals) and Glen Phillips (vocals/guitar/keyboards). It is interesting to note that at the time they were working in various Santa Barbara local venues, none of the band had even reached the legal drinking age required for entrance to those venues.. Still, it is important to note that the band's lyrics were delivered with intelligence and poise, and addressed social issues and personal relationships.

1961     Jim Reid, vocals/guitar, b. Glasgow, Scotland. Member group: 'The Jesus and Mary Chain', Formed: 1984 Glasgow, Scotland, consisted of brothers William Reid (b. Glasgow, Scotland)., and Jim Reid, plus Ben Lurie, Murray Dalglish, Douglas Hart, Bobby Gillespie, John Moore
1958     George Schuller, drums/percussion/Composer/Arranger/Leader, b. New York, NY, USA. George cames from a musical family, -- his father is Gunther Schuller, and his brother is Ed Schuller. George.has played with such stars as Lee Konitz, Herb Robertson, Matt Darriau, Mario Pavone, Michael Musillami, Roy Nathanson's Alphabet Lounge Band, Lisa Thorson, and Free Range Rat. In addition, he also leads several bands in the New York area including the 'Schulldogs' (an elastic, free-blowing, compositionally-based quartet), 'Circle Wide' (a quintet with free-bop leanings, formerly known as 'Chump Change'), 'Jigsaw' (an ensemble devoted to special projects involving strings and horns), and the innovative big band - 'Orange Then Blue'.

1942     Jerry Summers, vocals, b. Philadelphia, PA, USA. Member: 'The Dovells'
1942     Ray Thomas, harmonica/vocals, b. Stourport-on-Severn, England. Member group: 'Moody Blues'. When Denny Laine disbanded his 'Denny Laine and the Diplomats' (intending to form a new blues-soul group. he recruited Ray Thomas and keyboardist Mike Pinder, drummer Graeme Edge and bassist Clint Warwick to form the 'Moody Blues'. The group was named by combining the Blues genre with the first part of Pinder's favorite song, Duke Ellington's "Mood Indigo."

1957.    Ernie Henry, alto saxophonist died in New York, NY, USA. (né: Ernest Albert Henry. b. Sept 3, 1926, New York (Brooklyn), NY, USA)
1967.    Paul Whiteman, the "King of Jazz", died in Doylestown, Pennsylvania at age 77. He was arguably the most popular bandleader of the pre-swing era, whose orchestra had, from 1920 to 1934, more than 30 number-one hits including "Whispering," "Hot Lips," "Three O'Clock in the Morning"and "Ol' Man River." At various times, the Whiteman orchestra included such sidemen as cornetist Bix Beiderbecke, trombonists Jack Teagarden and Tommy Dorsey and trumpeters Henry Busse and Red Nichols. In 1926, singer Bing Crosby made his professional debut with Whiteman.
