1939     Jerry Fuller, drums, b. Calgary, Alb, Canada, d. July 13, 2002, Toronto, Ont, Canada (age: 63). Jerry came from a musical family. From 1937 through 1944, his father (James) 'Jerry' was a saxophonist/clarinetist, arranger (b. Banff, Alta, July 17, 1911), who led a big band at the Palliser Hotel in Calgary. When the family moved to Vancouver, his dad became the leader at 'The Cave' from 1944 into 1947. His son, Jerry studied with Jim Blackley and went to Westlake College in Los Angeles in 1958. During late 1950s, worked with Paul Perry's band at Sylvan Lake (a summer resort halfway between Edmonton and Calgary), also played with Don Thompson and Dale Hillary at 'The Cellar' in Vancouver.Over his career, he worked with many top American touring jazz artists, including Ron Collier, Duke Ellington, Pepper Adams, Paul Perry, Greg Clayton, and Rick Wilkins, Paul Desmond, Zoot Sims, and Lee Konitz. In the late 1990s, he recorded with the Chris Mitchell Combo, taking the grand prize in the Montreal International Jazz Festival Concours.

Her father died before she was 1 year old.Her mother sewed hats to support the family.When age 5, her family moved to Houston, TX, where her mother began sewing dresses to support them all. She was in the Drama club of the Albert Sydney Johnston Junior High School and then in the San Jacinto High School (both in Houston, TX).She met her husband-to-be while both were trying out for a CBS Radio show entitle "Gateway To Hollywood", -both won a one year contract with a movie studio. The couple had 4 children - 3 boys and 1 girl. Just before her first son was born, her husband joined the U. S. Coast Guard remaining there till WW 2 ended, while Gale went on USO tours selling bonds. Gale was quite religious and served as a Sunday School teacher. When she wasn't acting, most of her activities were church oriented. Late in her career, she was on the TV show "This Is Your Life".

1934     Stanley William "Stan" Turrentine, Tenor Sax, b. Pittsburgh, PA, USA. d. Sept.12, 2000, New York, NY, USA. (Complications due to a Stroke). Stanley came from a musical family, his mother played piano, his father played tenor sax and his brother Tommy played trumpet. Pianist Ahmad Jamal lived nearby and often visited to practice on the Turrentines' upright piano. While still in high school, the two brothers had their first professional gig at a local Pittsburgh venue, -the Perry Bar (they would often play together as adults). By age 16, Stanley was already traveling with a band, later joining a Ray Charles R&B group.He went on to play in Max Roach's Jazz band, and eventually replaced John Coltrane in Earl Bostic's band.He went solo in the 1960s, finding some commercial success with his albums "Stan 'The Man' Turrentine," "Up at Minton's," and "Never Let Me Go." But it was his album "Sugar" that brought him fame outside the jazz world.
