Mischa Spoliansky
b. Dec. 28, 1898, Bialystok, Russia. d. June 28, 1984, London, England, UK (natural causes)
The product of a musical family - he was the son of an opera singer - young Mischa was a prodigy, giving his first concert at the age of 10. In 1905, the Russian Revolution forced the family to flee, and they took up rersidence in Germany.
As a young man, Mischa became part of the booming theatrical and cabaret life of Berlin, during the era of the Weimar Replublic, composing scores for popular musical revues and establishing a reputation as an upbeat version of Kurt Weill. Among the stars with whom he worked were the director Max Reinhardt and the actress Marlene Dietrich. In 1930, Spoliansky's musical "Zwei Krawatten" was filmed. He even appeared as the Piano Man in the 1931 film, "Nie wieder Liebe".
In 1933, Spoliansky took up residence in England (just in time to avoid the Nazi pogroms in Germany) where film-maker Alexander Korda of London Films commissioned him to write the scores of "Sanders of the River" (1935 - which won the prize for Best Music at the Venice Film Fesitval), and "The Ghost Goes West" (1935). He scored over 50 movies in his 40 years as a composer in England, including the original scores for "King Solomon's Mines" (1937) and Otto Preminger's "Saint Joan" (1957). One of Spoliansky's film songs, `Goodbye Trouble' was sung by John Mills ( in the film `The History of Mr Polly', an adaptation of an H G Wells novel). He also composed a mini-piano concerto for the 1946 film "Wanted For Murder'. His last score was for the somber "Hitler: The Last Ten Days" (1973). Spoliansky's autobiography, edited by his daughter, the late stage actress Irmgard Spoliansky (a.k.a. Spoli Mills) , was slated to be published in Germany in 2004, with an English translation to follow.
"Spoli" has told interviewers of an interesting ocurrence.
While returning home one day, she came across her eccentric father standing in the Tube (Le Metro, - the Subway) station at Hyde Park Corner, with a hat beside him containing a few coins. When she asked what he was doing, he replied that the harmonica player, whose corner this was, had gone for a drink and he was keeping an eye on things. "But why you?" his daughter asked. "He's a fellow musician," her father replied.
His films also include 'King Solomon's Mines '

Oley Speaks
b. June 28, 1874, Canal Winchester, OH, USA,d. Aug. 27, 1948, New York, NY, USA.
As a young man, Oley was a railway clerk in the Columbus, Ohio station. He then decided to follow a career in music and took lessons from such
teachers as W. Macfarlane; Karl Dufft; Emma Thursby; Armour Galloway; and Max Spicker. He became a baritone soloist in a Columbus church, but in 1898, he settled in New York City. He was the baritone soloist at the Church of the Divine Paternity until 1901, and from 1901 until 1906, at the St. Thomas' Church.
During this period, he also pursued a successful career as a singer, touring the U.S.giving recitals and also appearing in oratorios. He also wrote many 'art' songs, which for many years, were unsuccessful. His first published song was "Thou Gazest at the Stars".
His greatest successes, each selling over a million copies of sheet music;
1907 "On The Road To Mandalay"
1910 "Morning", lyric by Frank Stanton
1914 "Sylvia", lyric Clinton Scollard
Speaks composed over 250 songs, some of which are:
"The Message"
"Star Eyes"

"Life"
"The Secret"
"Fuzzy Wuzzy"
"The Prayer Perfect"
"Little House of Dreams"
"Life's Twilight"
"The Lord Is My Light"

Speaks was one of those facile composers who often wrote tunes at a single
sitting. His technique was to fully memorize the lyric, then piece together
a suitable melody while sitting at the piano, improvising.
From 1924 until 1943, he was the director of ASCAP. He declined re-nomination
due to ill health.Speaks died in 1948, age 74.

b. Nov. 29, 1888, (some sources say b. Nov. 10, 1891) d. Nov. 29, 1972
Currently no information on this film composer, orchestrator, arranger.
Stalling He was part of a group of men used by Warner Brothers Pictures for their cartoon series of films. (Others were Winston Sharples, and John Kricfalusi.) Stalling's career extended from 1928 through to the 1970s. He is most closely associated with the "Looney Tunes" shorts produced by Warner Bros, where he worked, averaging one complete score each week, for twenty-two years. When Stalling retired, he was replaced by Milt Franklyn, who had assisted Stalling as arranger since 1950.
The following list clearly shows his influence on film cartoon music, and perhaps explains why he was often called 'The Dean of Tunes for 'Toons'.

Dave Stamper
b.Nov. 10, 1883, New York, NY, USA.d.
While attending the New York school system, Dave taught himself to play the piano. In 1900, at age 17, he became a working pianist in a Coney Island
dance hall, following which, he became a demonstration pianist and song plugger in New York's Tin Pan Alley. From 1903 to 1907, he toured vaudeville
circuits as accompanist for the famous star Nora Bayes. All during this time, Dave was writing songs.
Success came to him in 1912, when he started writing songs for the Ziegfeld Follies. Some of his Follies hits, were:
1913
"Just You and I and The Moon"
"Without You"
"Everybody Sometime Must Love Somebody
1914 He worked with Raymond Hubbell on the Follies score.
1915 He worked with Louis Hirsch on the Follies score.
1919 His Follies successes were:
"Tulip Time"
"Sweet Sixteen"
1921
"Sally, Won't You Come Back?"
"Raggedy Ann"
"Plymouth Rock"
1922
"My Rambler Rose", in collaboration with Louis Hirsch
"'Neath the South Sea Moon", collaborated with L. Hirsch
1923
"Some Sweet Day", with Louis Hirsch
1931
"Broadway Reverie"
"Bring on the Follies Girl"
The 1931 edition of the Ziegfeld Follies was Stamper's last significant association with Broadway. The 1931 Follies was also the
last Follies that Florenz Ziegfeld produced himself.
In addition to his work for Ziegfeld, Stamper also wrote some complete Broadway musical scores. Among these are 1927's 'Take The Air', that starred Will Mahoney singing, "We'll Have a New Home in the Morning", and "All I Want Is A Lullaby", both with lyrics by Buck. The show 'The Lovely Lady', had his songs, "Make Believe You're Happy", and "Ain't Love Grand", both with lyrics by Cyrus Wood. Dave Stamper went into retirement in the mid-thirties.
Herman Stein
b. Aug. 19, 1915, Philadelphia, PA, USA.
Stein started playing piano at the age of three-and-a-half; gave his first public recital at six, and later performed both solo and in groups in
restaurants and bars.
He taught himself orchestration by studying scores at the library, and was arranging professionally by the age of 15, including work for radio
station KYW in Philadelphia.During the 1930s and '40s, he wrote and arranged for radio programs and jazz orchestras, including works for Fred Waring, Rubinoff "and his Magic Violin," Bob Crosby, Blanche Calloway, Gus Haenschen (which included background vocal arrangements for a young singer,- Vic Damone), Tony Pastor, Mal Hallet, Red Norvo, and other orchestras. For example, one of his arrangements was Count Basie's "Pennies From Heaven."
Herman moved to Los Angeles in 1948 and studied composition with famed composer Mario
Castelnuovo-Tedesco.In 1950, he was hired by Universal Pictures, and after arranging music for Universal for almost a year, he became a staff composer in 1951.Curiously, although he was equally adept at scoring all forms of comedy and drama, he was involved mostly with Universal's science-fiction
films of the 1950s. His exceptional contributions to that genre can be heard in such films as 'Abbott And Costello Go To Mars', 'Creature From The Black Lagoon', 'The Creature Walks Among Us', 'The Incredible Shrinking Man', 'It Came From Outer Space', 'The Land Unknown', 'The Mole People', 'The Monolith Monsters', 'Monster On The Campus', 'The Revenge Of The Creature', 'Tarantula', and 'This Island Earth'.
Overall, Stein's writing graced close to 200 films, among them:All I Desire, Backlash, The Black Shield Of Falworth, Border River, Captain
Lightfoot, City Beneath The Sea, A Day Of Fury, Female On The Beach, Four Girls In Town, Francis Goes To West Point, The Glass Web, Girls In The Night, The Great Man, I've Lived Before, Ma and Pa Kettle At Home, Man In The Shadow, Man Without A Star, Meet Me At The Fair, No Name On The Bullet, The Purple Mask, Quantez, Ride Clear Of Diablo, Sign Of The Pagan, Six Bridges To Cross, Slim Carter, Take Me To Town, Toy Tiger, The Unguarded Moment, Walk The Proud Land, Yellow Mountain, and the composer's personal favorite, The Intruder, a superb Roger Corman film about racism. He also wrote music for commercials, and some of his work in television was for Daniel Boone, Gunsmoke, The Legend Of Jesse James, Lost In Space, M-Squad, Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea, and Wagon Train.
It is an interesting historical note that Herman Stein started work at Universal Pictures before Henry Mancini did, and it was Herman who helped
show the young composer 'the ropes' when Mancini was first hired by that studio.
The BigBands Database thanks David Stein for graciously supplying this information on Herman Stein.
Lew Spence
b: June 29, 1920, Cedarhurst, Long Island, NY, USA. d. Jan. 9, 1008, Los Angeles (Hollywood), CA, USA. Age: 87.
This West Coast Songwriter/Composer wrote for some of the greatest voices of the 1950's and '60's. For Frank Sinatra, one of Spence's biggest fans, he wrote the standard "Nice "N Easy" as well as "Half As Lonely", "If I Had Three Wishes", "Love Looks So Well On You" and the classics "Sleep Warm" and "So Long My Love". For Dean Martin, he penned the hits "On Again Off Again" and "Outta My Mind". While for Johnny Mathis, he wrote the beautiful "Magic Garden" and "Live It Up". Great female vocalists have also covered Spence songs, including Barbra Streisand (and host of others over the years) who cut the standard "That Face" and Peggy Lee's "That's Him Over There" and "I've Never Been So Happy In Love". Lew was age 87 when he passed away. (Thanks to music director and composer Mr. Tom Griep for this information on his good friend Lew Spence.)
