Overview.
Sammy Fain, wrote his hit songs starting in the 1920's, and kept on writing them into the 1970's. He became known as the "Crooning Composer" for the vocal recordings he made in the late 1920s and early 1930s for Columbia and its bargain subsidiary labels, Velvet Tone, Harmony, and Diva. Some of his releases were his own tunes while some were by other composers. Listen now to the "Crooning Composer" as he sings a song by another composer
"To Be In Love (Especially With You)", (530 kb) written by Fred Ahlert, and Roy Turk. Fain recorded the tune in 1929. Among the lyricists with which he collaborated are Paul Francis Webster, E. Y. Harburg, Jack Yellen, Mitchell Parish and Lew Brown.
Although born in New York City, his family moved from New York to the Catskill mountains (a resort area about 60 miles north of New York City). His
father was a Cantor, and Sammy was the first cousin of the famous vaudeville comedians Willie and Eugene Howard. As a young child, Sammy taught himself to play piano, and was writing and selling songs while
still in high school.
Fain left home after finishing High School, went back to New York City, and got a job with Jack Mills Publishing as staff pianist. A little later, he
formed a vaudeville act with Artie Dunn (Fain and Dunn). In 1925, he teamed up with lyricist Al Dubin, and wrote his first hit, "Nobody Knows What a Red-Headed Mama Can Do". But, in 1927, he formed a partnership with a young lyricist,
Irving Kahal, who had been discovered by Gus Edwards, and and was working in Gus' 'School Boys and Girls' vaudeville acts. The 'team' stayed together for 17 years, until Kahal died in 1942. Curiously, Kahal often combined with other lyricists when working on Fain's music.
1927 "There's Something About a Rose", lyric by Kahal and Francis Wheeler
1927's "Let a Smile Be Your Umbrella"
1929's "Wedding Bells Are Breaking Up That Old Gang of Mine" lyric: Kahal and Willie Raskin
After 1930, Fain and Kahal went to Hollywood, and composed a great deal for all the early musicals. Sammy worked briefly for Paramount, then went to
work for Warner Bros. He has contributed to many Hollywood studios, including work on Peter Pan and Alice In Wonderland, both of which are Walt Disney Studio productions.
His songs of the 1930's include:
1930's "You Brought a New Kind of Love to Me," lyric Kahal and Pierre Norman
introduced by Maurice Chevalier in film The Big Pond.
1931's "When I Take My Sugar to Tea," lyric by Kahal and Pierre Norman
193? "By A Waterfall", a production number for film Footlight Parade
1938's "That Old Feeling," lyric Kahal
1938 Fain wrote some songs for the Olsen and Johnson show, Hellzapoppin, w: Charles Tobias
1938's "I Can Dream, Can I?" and "I'll Be Seeing You", both lyrics by Kahal
1938 "That Old Feeling", lyric by Lew Brown, for film, Vogues of 1938
1940 Happy In Love", lyric by Jack Yellen, for show Son's of Fun.
(Olsen and Johnson successor to Hellzapoppin.)
1949 "Dear Hearts and Gentle People", lyric by Bob Hilliard
After Kahal's death, in 1942, Fain began collaborating with lyricist Paul Francis Webster.
Among their work together is:
1953 "Secret Love", film Calamity Jane. The song won an Academy Award.
1955 "Love Is A Many Spendored Thing", another Academy Award winner.
1957 "April Love"
1958 They wrote the full score for the film Mardi Gras. The two songs most
remembered are "I'll Remember Tonight" and "Loyalty".
1959 They wrote songs for TV musical 'A Diamond for Carla'
1960 They wrote the score for a Broadway play 'Christine'.
1961 "Tender is the Night", for film of same name.
